Side by side
| Adopt | Buy from a breeder | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront price | Shelter averages: dog under 1 year $185, over 1 year $109; cat under 1 $82, over 1 $52 [3] Range: $50–$500 [1] | Breeder puppies: $675–$4,440 [1] Average listed price $1,300, median $1,000 [2] |
| Often included | Many shelters spay or neuter, vaccinate and microchip before adoption, which is part of why the fee is low. | Varies by breeder. Ask what shots and checks the puppy has had. |
| Knowing the background | History may be unknown, but adult pets' size and personality are already clear. | A good breeder can show parents' health test results for the breed. |
| First year overall | ASPCA puts the first year with a newly adopted pet at $1,100–$3,200 [3] | ASPCA first-year total for a puppy: $3,221 [4] |
After you bring them home
Food, vet visits, preventives and insurance cost the same whether your pet came from a shelter or a breeder. Breed and size change the bill much more than where the pet came from.
If you are buying, ask the breeder for health test results on both parents. Our breed health pages list which tests each breed club recommends.
