Size
"Domestic shorthair" (and domestic medium- or longhair) is a description used by shelters and vets, not a breed, so there's no official size range. Ask your vet what a healthy weight is for your cat's frame.
Typical lifespan
A study of cats seen at 90 vet practices in England found a median lifespan of 14.0 years for crossbred cats, versus 12.5 years for purebred cats; individual breeds varied a lot. [1] The same study linked being neutered and having a lower bodyweight to longer lives. [1]
Costs
| Routine vet visit (owner bills) | $190–$525 | [2] |
| Dental cleaning (owner bills) | $350–$1,450 | [3] |
| Kidney disease (CKD) care | $600–$3,500 total | [4] |
| Yearly cost of a cat (ASPCA 2021) | $1,149 | [5] |
| Average accident & illness insurance, cat (US 2025) | $435/year | [6] |
Health: benefits and risks
Mixed genetics don't make a cat immune to illness. In the England study, the most common causes of death across all cats were trauma, kidney disorders, non-specific illness and cancer. [1] Regular checkups, dental care and keeping weight in check matter for every cat.
Cat DNA tests
Cat DNA tests can show ancestry and screen for some genetic conditions, but most domestic cats won't come back as a single breed. Wisdom Panel Complete for Cats was $103.99 on sale ($129.99 regular) in October 2026. [7]
