Size ranges

There's no breed standard for a mixed-breed dog, so there's no official size. Vets and price sites group dogs by size instead, and that's how we show costs below. If you adopted a puppy, ask the shelter or your vet for a best guess on adult size; paw size and parents (if known) are rough clues, not guarantees.

Typical lifespan

A UK study of 584,734 dogs found a median lifespan of 12.0 years for crossbreds and 12.7 years for purebreds overall, with big differences between individual breeds. [1] So a mixed breed isn't automatically longer-lived; size matters a lot, and smaller dogs generally live longer. [1]

Health: benefits and risks of mixed genetics

A UC Davis study of 27,254 dogs with inherited disorders looked at 24 conditions. [5]

Bottom line: mixing can lower the odds of some breed-linked problems, but it doesn't protect against everything. Budget for vet care like any dog.

Should you do a DNA test?

A DNA test can hint at adult size and flag some inherited risks, but results vary between companies and it isn't a vet diagnosis. Prices in October 2026: Wisdom Panel from $89.99 (breed only) to $127.99 (breed + health) [6]; Embark from $109 (breed ID). [7]
