Biopsy cost for dogs
A biopsy sends a piece of tissue to a lab so a pathologist can say exactly what a lump or problem is.

Each source measures something a little different: published clinic prices, national averages or real owner bills. Use them to plan, and ask your vet for a written estimate.
What it is
Small biopsies can be taken with local anesthetic or sedation; others are taken during surgery. The lab report usually takes several days. [2]
When vets recommend it
It's used when a needle sample isn't enough to tell whether a lump is harmless or cancer, and for some skin and organ problems. [2]
Recovery and aftercare
Small biopsy sites usually heal within two weeks. [2]
What affects the cost
- The kind of sample A skin lump the vet can reach costs least. Internal or multi-site samples need anesthesia. [1]
- How the lab reading is billed Some practices include it in one line and others add $200–$450 separately. [1]
- How many samples Each extra site adds $50–$150. [1]
- Sedation or anesthesia Adds $50–$300 when the site needs it. [1]
Ways to save
- Ask about a needle sample first In our data the needle sample and its reading came to $115–$390. Ask your vet whether it is an option for this lump. [1]
- Ask for the all-in price Taking the sample and the lab reading. A low quote may leave out a $200–$450 lab charge. [1]
- If several lumps need sampling, ask the per-sample price The visit and any anesthesia are shared between them. [1]
Common questions
How much does biopsy for dogs cost?
Biopsy on owner bills, median: $250. Your vet's written estimate is what counts, since prices vary by clinic, region and your pet's needs.
How much is a biopsy for a dog?
In VetReceipt's data (47 real biopsy line items), a dog biopsy typically costs $170–$400. That usually covers taking the sample and the histopathology — the lab pathologist's reading, which is where much of the cost sits. Simple punch biopsies of a skin lump start around $130; surgical biopsies of internal organs or multiple sites run higher because they need sedation or anesthesia. The exam fee and any sedation are often separate line items, so ask for the all-in number.
Why is the lab (histopathology) charge separate from the biopsy?
Many clinics bill the procedure and the lab work as separate lines: taking the sample (the biopsy itself) and reading it (histopathology, sent to an outside lab like IDEXX or Antech). In VetReceipt's invoice data both patterns appear — bundled single lines and split lines — which is one reason quotes for "a biopsy" vary so much between clinics. When comparing estimates, make sure both parts are included: a $150 biopsy quote that excludes a $250 histopathology charge isn't cheaper than a $350 all-in quote.
Will pet insurance pay for it?
Many accident-and-illness plans help with treatment like this if the problem isn't pre-existing and any waiting period has passed. Check your policy, and ask your vet for an itemized estimate you can send to the insurer ahead of time.
