What it is
The surgeon breaks up and removes the cloudy lens (phacoemulsification) and usually places an artificial lens. Before surgery, an electroretinogram and eye ultrasound check that the dog is a good candidate. [3]
When vets recommend it
Cataracts can be inherited, come with age, or develop quickly in diabetic dogs. Eye drops can't dissolve a cataract. [3]
Recovery and aftercare
Expect several weeks of eye drops, a cone and recheck visits. Rechecks and refills are often billed separately. [3]
Medicines vets often use around this treatment: Prednisone & Prednisolone. We don't list doses; your vet will decide what fits your pet.
