Health problems linked to the Ragdoll
| Condition | What it is | Related costs |
|---|---|---|
| Heart diseaseNamed by: PetMD vet-reviewed guide [1] | Breed clubs ask breeders to have hearts checked, often by a cardiologist, because some inherited heart problems run in the breed. [2] | Cat ultrasound (owner bills): $90–$400 [3] |
| Bladder stonesNamed by: PetMD vet-reviewed guide [1] | Minerals in the urine form stones that irritate the bladder or block urine flow. A pet straining to pee with nothing coming out needs a vet right away. [4] | Cat urinary treatment (owner bills): $275–$950 [5] |
| Arthritis and joint problemsNamed by: PetMD vet-reviewed guide [1] | Worn or malformed joints cause stiffness and pain. Cats hide it well, so watch for less jumping and changes in litter box use. [6] | X-rays (average reported): avg $493 (range $56–$1,000) [7] |
| Allergies and itchy skinNamed by: PetMD vet-reviewed guide [1] | Allergies to pollen, dust mites or food often show up as itchy skin, paw licking and ear infections. They are managed, not cured. [8] | Cat vet visit (owner bills): $190–$525 [9] |
Costs are national figures from our sourced cost guides, not breed-specific prices. Being on this list doesn't mean a pet will get the condition.
PetMD's vet-reviewed guide to the Ragdoll lists these conditions to know about: Heart disease, Bladder stones, Weight and joint issues, Food and seasonal allergies. [1]
Health screening
The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory lists 5 DNA health tests for the Ragdoll, including Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA rdAc) (Abyssinian); Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD1); Mucopolysaccharidosis VI (MPS VI); Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Ragdolls; Dilute. [10] One health test costs $47 there. [11]
What to budget
Breed-specific cat bills aren't published, but a routine vet visit for any cat typically runs $190–$525. [9]
Lifetime cost, roughly. Our yearly estimate for an adult Ragdoll at US-average prices, before insurance, is $800–$1,300. Multiply that by a life expectancy of up to 17 years and you get roughly $13,600–$22,500 over a lifetime, before inflation and before any major illness. The low end is the ASPCA's yearly cost of care; the high end adds one typical vet bill a year. [9][12] It's simple math on sourced figures, not a quote.
Insurance and savings
The average accident and illness policy cost $435 a year for a cat in the US in 2025. [13] Timing matters more than the price. A condition that shows up before you enroll is usually treated as pre-existing and isn't covered. [14]
Prefer saving instead? Putting money aside each month works too; see insurance vs a savings fund.
